After many promises and endless waiting, Dream Multimedia has finally landed on the HD market with its first model, the DM800 HD PVR, which has a few months before the release of the long awaited flagship DM8000 HD PVR. Let's see in detail!

The box takes up the existing line of previous models DM500, DM500 + and DM600. Aesthetically well kept, is of diminutive size and can be placed almost anywhere. On the front is a horizontally hinged door that hides the only card slots available on this model. On the front panel OLED display even a very small, almost illegible already three feet away but still useful for reflashing operations and to monitor the status of the decoder. There is also a power button on and off.

The remote is identical to the number 7000-7020-7025, very ergonomic and practical, perhaps the only flaw color, maybe black would be more appropriate to do so, since DM800HD it is virtually in its entirety. To underline that there is also a white version of the same DM800HD, in limited edition.

At the rear, despite its small size, the park is vast and connectors allows the connection of different devices. And 'this is a DVB-S2 (in and out), a connector for connecting external eSATA hard disk drives (used only if there is already an internal hard disk), a serial port RS-232 for operations of reflashing, the ubiquitous LAN port, 2 USB, a scart plug for modem, digital audio output, and of course the power connector. DM800 having regard to its small size makes use of external power of course. For features HD features a DVI. It is fitting given that this does not affect in any way assolutissimamente the full functionality of the decoder, was born as a link DVI only video but were free of the pins used to transfer audio, then the decoder will be able to properly provide the TV signal is video and audio in Dolby Digital AC3, just like any other satellite receiver with hdmi.

Another note on the DVI is that it is perfectly capable of also providing 1080p signal, contrary to those who say that 800 and 8000 are "only" 1080i. In fact, the presence of 1080p sources, with the plugin "autoresolution" enabled, the decoder is able to switch automatically to the progressive, thus enabling us to take full advantage, even in full-HD content. No problem even for HDCP, the protocol is handled directly by the machine will return to the video signal without such protection.

Very elegant and entirely black with new logo Dreambox big in the middle, from the impression of an extremely professional and well cared for. Inside you will find:

- Dreambox 800

- DVI-HDMI cable

- Power supply and power cord

- A drive-scart + rca cables rca

- User Manual
Remote control

We also find a special mask, to be replaced on the back of the decoder in case you want to replace the DVB-S2 standard with a DVB-T. Dream Multimedia has thought of everything.

The Dreambox 800, internally, is very compact as a decoder but with all the components are properly disposed and ordered, we see some details. On the right you can see the new alps tuner DVB-S2 and the video chipset broadcom. On the left, in addition to the modem, capacitors, card reader, and the metal bracket for mounting a 2.5-inch hard disk drive. It must be said that the space to operate is really tiny and everything is calculated in millimeters, you do so be careful when you assemble the hard disk.

Let's start by saying that unlike the "old" models 500 and 7000, with the arrival of 7020 using a dreambox is much more user friendly. So we'll find programming to provide a convenient web interface, called up directly from the Internet browser that will allow us to upgrade our box with ease. The firmware available (commonly called "images") and there are so many spoiled for choice. Immediately after the first programming, the procedure for the initial setup wizard will then greatly simplified. The boot is practically infinite, the first boot dm800 with their configurations takes about 4-5 minutes, then it will be faster, but always in the order of 2-3 minutes, but it must be said that Enigma2 all this is perfectly normal, a Enigma1 compared in terms of graphics performance and is not really possible.

Who has so far only used 500 or 7000 will do a little effort these days to get used to at first, but after a while 'all will be well rewarded by a car full of performance and plenty to discover. The decoder works very well, are provided by the parent company for quality new and second stage bootloader new drivers, and this has helped to make in the months dm800 machine is very stable and very functional, is now unlikely to have crashed or block the software, which instead was typical of the first software release.
The various lineups, as they taught us the dream has always been, and are fully customizable through a variety of downloadable software (one of them is DreamBoxEdit) or you can directly load pre-packaged online listings. Settings Enigma1 Enigma2 and are compatible with each other, provided, however, through the appropriate software DreamBoxEdit is set correctly if the box that will receive the settings or is enigma1 enigma2. Of course, on 800 and 8000 should charge only ad hoc settings specifically designed for this specific model of decoder, otherwise we will not find any listings tunable HD channel since there are no models with HD enigma1.

The video quality (probably one of the most important things in a decoder of the sort) is definitely excellent, I did several tests and comparisons with another chipset Sigma Designs HD decoder (remember that 800 and 8000 mountain broadcom as skybox) and differences of view on quality of HD channels are truly laughable. SD instead of the speech a little 'change, to have an acceptable quality standard-definition channels it is necessary to keep the plugin enabled autoresolution leading to 576p output resolution on our television. In fact the picture in 1080i looks pretty dirty and definitely not very sharp, full of sound, unlike the decoder chipset sigma competitor that I tested, which offers excellent output quality even on SD channels if set to 1080i/1080p. But I repeat that as I said, the plugin autoresolution brilliantly solves the problem, with it enabled, the output quality of DM800 will always be high.

I tried mounting a hard disk, in this case Toshiba 250GB. The operation is always impeccable, and the hard disk does not feel it at all. One recommendation is to mount dm800 always in a place that is at least a bit 'windy, especially with internal hard disk fitted. Its small size allows it not a great ventilation inside and this can cause overheating bad if the receiver is positioned in such a cabinet, with no ventilation. It must be said, however, that since the first release of the software, this aspect of the DM800 has improved so much, just warming is now the norm, and with proper use, you will not even need to use additional fans, it has integrated well into able to manage themselves alone.

Also good management of HD files in 720p/1080p, the decoder works very well as a media player. It should be emphasized, however, that in the case of 720p files playback is smooth and without problems, while in the case of 1080p files, things do not always go your way because of the very high bit rate that is not always DM800 can handle, so some particularly with other files bitrate (files over 10GB) may not work correctly. The divx are not directly visible to the decoder, it is therefore necessary as on earlier models, vlc to run these files properly.

Dreambox 800 is undoubtedly a box with exceptional performance, a concentration of multimedia in an elegant and tiny chassis, studied in detail. No problem with a particular flaws or weaknesses, if not the price, 449 € are certainly not a trivial expense, but I think the price is correctly proportioned in relation to the ongoing commitment of the parent company in developing it continuously, releasing weekly drivers, bootloader and everything 'Another contributing to the improvement of the machine every day. Undoubtedly, from this point of view, a safety!

Thanks Stardust
